Determined to make the most of our time here we got the map
out and looked for places we could visit. We both felt a trip to the beach was
in order. After consulting our permit on where we could go we set off. Our
first destination was to a beach past the yacht club, as we got past the club
we drove through a small aboriginal area. This is where it got confusing, the
signs said we needed a special permit, but the map didn’t show anything. Not
knowing what was going on we left and headed for a beach we knew we could go
to. By now we were feeling very disillusioned with the whole place, there was a
definite feeling of uneasiness and we both felt quite stressed and not at all
relaxed.
We got down to a place called Rainbow Cliff, very pretty but
it was made very clear you could not access the face or the top of the cliff.
There were no signs however telling you which part of the area was the cliff.
We eventually reasoned that the biggest one was probably the one so we headed
the opposite direction. We walked quite a distance before realising we hadn’t
brought any water, we were both feeling quite uneasy about the whole situation.
We decided to continue on for a bit, do some quick pics and then come back.
I must say there were some really lovely shells on the
beach, so I busied myself exploring while Iain took photos and walked out on
the rocks. We decided to do a photo shoot, but we were both so stressed after
about 10 mins we decided to go back.
Funnily enough once we got to the beach just in front of the
car, we both relaxed and mucked around in the shallows – one person always on
the lookout for crocs and no more than ankle deep! We did some more photos and
then decided to go back into town for a coffee and afternoon tea.
I can’t say anything more than Nhulunbuy was closed. Even
the surf club and the golf club were closed for service at 2.30. We went back
to the hotel and spent the afternoon reading by the pool, and catching up on our blog.
