Nhulumbuy 31/8/2013

We got up early and did a quick, pack up – we were keen to get out of the gravel pit and on the road as soon as possible, just in case someone happened on us. On the way out we had to stop and take pictures of the enormous termite mounds.

We got a couple of km down the road when we saw a ute stopped on a side road with a guy standing in front of it. We slowed down to see if everything was OK, he walked over and started chatting to us. Turns out he is from Tasmania and comes up once a year to bring American Tourists in to shoot Buffalo. He asked where we stayed the night and after explaining that we stayed in a gravel pit as we have a rule to always be out of sight, he told us he has the same rule and never travels without a gun. At that point I was relieved he seemed to be friendly – makes you wonder though.

The rest of the trip was pretty unremarkable, and we arrived in Nhulunbuy at around 12. After checking into our hotel we went to look for the tyre shop to see if they could repair our tyre. The guy was still there but he had closed up, so we had to wait until Monday. We headed into town to get a few things from Woollies and have a general look around. It was a typical mining town, with nothing much there. We went back to the hotel room and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing.

The manager of the motel suggested we go down to the beach and watch the sunset. He suggested a place called Crocodile creek. Before leaving we asked about the best place to buy fish and chips. Now you would think that being on the gulf there would be an abundance of places selling fish. Not so! We went to a take away he suggested and ended up with greasy deep fried fish and chips – very disappointing.

With dinner in hand we headed for the beach, he was right it was very secluded with no-one else there, we soon realised that it was because it was close to the refinery and the yellow smoke was blowing right across it. We gave that up as a bad idea and decided to find a better beach. We drove closer to town and the found the popular beaches – there were loads of people watching the sunset and having BBQ’s. As the sun went down we looked down the beach and there were loads of little fires all along it.

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing in our room.
